A happy ending for one dog in my neighborhood | littleduckie's Blog

Just a little while ago, I noticed a stray dog in my neighbor's yard . . . she had been in my yard, too, and had bolted, based on the tracks.  She was a small German shepherd or shepherd mix.  Anyway, she did have tags and I was trying to lure her back to my yard so I could see them & call the owner when I noticed a van driving by slowly & someone whistling.  A-ha!  I flagged the guy down & it was in fact the owner . . . the poor doggie was so scared & acting so timid, and he said that was totally unlike her.  At first, he was afraid she'd been hit by a car because she was lying down, but when she saw him she got up & trotted happily back to the van, tail wagging, and with no sign of injury.  Let's hope nothing becomes apparent later.

My dad knew I was trying to help this lost dog & dismissed my concern that she could be hit by a car, but the owner, once he showed up, said she has been hit before.  This is a busy street, and she was nearly a mile from home.  It was so easy to just stay with the dog and try to help her get home.  I couldn't imagine just leaving her out there to be hurt or killed.

So I'm asking everyone who has a pet . . . please keep your dog or cat safe.  They don't have the ability to protect themselves in traffic, so we have to make sure they're never put in that situation.  And if you find a stray, approach cautiously and see if you can get close enough to help.  If you can't do it yourself, at least call animal control to come out & get the dog or cat to a safe place.  Don't just leave them out there!

Thanks, Eric. :) I walked over to that guy's neighborhood the next day to see if the dog was still okay, but he wasn't home. I did have a nice chat with his neighbor who was out shoveling his driveway, and I got to meet the neighbor's puppy, a little beagle/pug mix. Cutest little thing!

Very nice save Duckie, I do that myself when ever I see stray dogs in my area. Try to see if I can get them back home. I would hope someone would do that for me if my Zoe got out. It only takes a few minutes to try and help. I hate to think of someone's pet already scared being hurt as well. Also pet owners need to make sure they have a collar and tags on their pets all the time. Too many pets have a collar, but no tags. Good for you for helping that poor dog. I am sure the people were thankful as well.

Thanks, Kleisse. The whole series of events was amazing. Earlier in the evening, I was just about to throw away a stale loaf of French bread when I thought maybe I should put it out for the neighborhood wildlife. Then when I went out for that smoke, there were dog tracks around it. I had to wonder if the dog was attracted to the bread & that helped keep her out of traffic. Then I just happened to be outside with her exactly when the owner was driving by. It was awesome. :)

Oh, also adding that when I visited the dog's neighbor the next day, he gave me more details about the previous time she had been hit by a car. She had extensive damage to one leg and hip, and actually has steel plates in there now! She was also lost for a week that time. No wonder she was so scared when I found her!
